September 18, 2026 – January 22, 2027
curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi

21Art Treviso presents, from September 18 2026 to January 22, 2027 the new solo exhibition of Gonzalo Borondo (Valladolid, 1989), Sull'imbrunire curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi. A powerful, new pictorial cycle, in the wake of a mature pleasure in painting, always on glass plates, but this time with strokes of a brush soaked in a dense black palette. The result is a surface moist with dark matter torn by unprecedented flashes of gold and silver leaf that ignite on the surface the bed of a karst river of visions. The transparent support ceases to be a mere passive diaphragm to become a battlefield of majestic scenic layouts. The painting becomes a theater of increasingly intense duels between emptiness and fullness, light and shadow, battles against the backdrop of a conceptual and formal heritage that evokes, on one hand, the whimsical, loose and rapid mark, and a strong sense of chiaroscuro characteristic of Rembrandt, on the other hand the dramatic nature of the scenes, dark and fierce in the mark of his compatriot Jusepe de Ribera. Borondo paints to then scratch (with his original technique of scratching) the pictorial film on the reverse of the glass surface – the skin of the work – to create a void around the figure, freeing it from any desire for verisimilitude, and delivering it to the precariousness of an ephemeral illumination, to a form in existential chaos.
